In our interview, we asked Melissa about how to get started on this life-changing journey, her success stories and her awesome tips on eating well.
OB: Thank you for joining us on OB Life! Your philosophy, projects and focus have reminded us that nourishment isn’t only about food, but also about giving our minds and spirits some sustenance! Can you give us any advice about how to nurture the mind and how to turn our attention inwards?
MA: I believe the best place to start is with meditation. Meditation is a super powerful tool that allows us to tap into that innate wisdom within us. It’s also such a beautiful way to calm the mind and cultivate real inner peace.
There is a common misconception that meditation is ‘hard work’, or that having lots of thoughts means you can’t meditate. The truth is, thoughts are part of meditation, and all it takes is dedication to sitting down and closing your eyes for 10-20 minutes at a time.
For anyone wanting to try this beautiful practice, I have some amazing guided meditations on my website and if you sign up you get one for free. Just head to melissaambrosini.com to get yours.
OB: A lot of your work focuses on empowering women. Is this because women face more challenges and inequality? Do you have any great stories you can share about how you have helped anyone in your community overcome their barriers?
MA: The reason I primarily work with women is because... well quite frankly, I love them! I feel like it is my calling to support and inspire them. I have so many beautiful stories I could share, but the first one that comes to mind is of one of my clients who was a lawyer and had this dream of starting her own jewellery label.
She was really struggling with self-belief. She had so much negative Mean Girl (aka ego) chatter going on. Her inner Mean Girl was constantly telling her she could never do it, that she was silly for leaving her high paying job to build something from scratch. But after working together for a few sessions, she started to let go of those Mean Girl thoughts. We worked on reprogramming her mindset and creating new beliefs, until she finally had the courage to leap.
Now her business is doing 6 figures and she is happier than ever. Word of warning, it wasn’t completely rainbows and butterflies once she left her job, of course. It took work. She put in the hours and was determined and it all paid off. I am so proud of her.
I love watching women smash through limiting beliefs and creating the life of their dreams. It seriously lights me up.
OB: Women’s time can be pulled in many directions (as mothers, friends, lovers, sisters etc.) so ‘me-time’, creativity, exercise can all get pushed to the side. Do you have any tips on time management and/or stress management?
MA: Firstly, you must make self care your number one priority. Of course, that’s not always easy when you have three kids, a job, a house to clean and food to put on the table, but you have to make it happen anyway. Even if it’s only 10 minutes when the kids are asleep or if it means you have to get up 10 minutes earlier in the morning. Whatever you have to do, do it — it’s worth it!
YOU’RE worth it!
Because when you take the time to fill up your own tank and treat yourself well, you show up to the world as the best version of you. But when you let self care slip, you show up as the cranky, half-assed version of yourself. And let’s face it, you and your kids, friends, family and colleagues don’t deserve that.
Secondly, in regards to stress, meditation is key! Find and make the time. Put it in your calendar and quit making excuses. Stop watching TV and use that time to meditate instead. Start with my 10 minute guided meditations and go from there.
OB: What are your words of wisdom for someone struggling with body image, and an unhealthy relationship with food?
MA: I used to entertain a very tortuous relationship with food and my body. But I realised that I needed to fall back in love with myself. I know, easier said than done! But in order to become bursting with love, you have to flex your self love muscle.
This is exactly why I created my online program, ‘Get Your Glow On’. It teaches women how to truly glow from the inside out, which is the first place to start to heal your relationship with your body and food.
OB: Tell us about your favourite foods to eat and why?!
MA: I love organic veggies because they taste so good and are so incredibly nutritious. I also love slow cooked grass-fed and grass-finished meats, wild seafood and organic eggs. Not only do they all taste AMAZING, but they are extremely nourishing and good for you. What’s not to love?!
OB: Do you have any great superfood tips to share?
MA: I eat a very high superfood diet. For me, veggies are the ultimate superfood. I love experimenting with different ways to cook and prepare them, and trying new varieties that I find at my local farmers’ markets.
My fave Organic Burst product is the chlorella granules. I love adding them to all sorts of meals — they remind me of healthy sprinkles! I put them on my salads, veggies, and even on top of an avo with a drizzle of lemon and pinch of salt and pepper… YUMMO!
